Big Bird appears on 'SNL' by Gabe Lorden

After a three-day silence, Big Bird appeared on Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” to comment about his new found fame after he was mentioned on Wednesday night’s presidential debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.

Watch the clip above, and you’ll realize that Big Bird avoided ruffling any feathers by getting too political. The huge yellow bird did mention, “I got a million tweets,” but when Seth Meyers asked him if he was on Twitter, he replied, “No, I’m a bird, tweeting is how we talk.”

As you all know, Mitt Romney wants to foreclose Sesame Street and tell Big Bird to go the way of Oscar the Grouch

But this clip from Thursday's "Conan" shows that Mittens might want to go even further, and reenact a famous scene from "North by Northwest" with ol' BB.  Except in Hitchcock's version, Cary Grant got away.

8-Year-Old Big Bird Fan To Mitt Romney: 'You Find Something Else To Cut Off!'

Eight-year-old Alabama resident Cecelia Crawford wasn't happy during the presidential debate on Wednesday night after Mitt Romney said he would stop government funding for PBS.

On Thursday morning, she was still upset, so she wrote Mr. Romney a letter, sent along to The Huffington Post by her mother.  Crawford wrote that she is a fan of "Sesame Street" and that it was her "favorite show on earth" when she was younger.

"When I grow up I'm going to get married and I want my kids to watch it so do not cut it off," Crawford wrote. "You find something else to cut off!"

Romney told PBS host Jim Lehrer, who moderated the presidential debate, that he would stop the subsidy to Lehrer's network. "I’m sorry, Jim, I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS ... I like PBS, I love Big Bird -- I actually like you, too -- but I am not going to keep spending money on things [we have] to borrow money from China to pay for," Romney said.

Crawford's mother mailed the letter on Thursday to Romney's campaign headquarters.

The Romney campaign has yet to respond.

Protest continues on Sesame Street

The third straight day of protest on Sesame Street brought more violence and more arrest as police struggle to keep the peace. 

It all started during Wednesday night’s presidential debate when GOP candidate Mitt Romney said he would end subsidies to PBS.  Romney said to the moderator and PBS newsman Jim Lehrer “I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you too. But I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for things we don’t need.”

Since Wednesday night, Muppets along with thousands of supporters have occupied Sesame Street as a show of protest with no end in sight.

Sesame Street ready to Strike Back by Gabriel Lorden

In a showing of unity, multiple characters of Sesame Street united in response to Mitt Romney’s threats to cut PBS funding at Wednesday nights presidential debate.

During the debate with President Barack Obama, Romney said to moderator and PBS newsman Jim Lehrer that: “I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you too. But I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for things we don’t need.”

During Wednesday night’s presidential debate, GOP candidate Mitt Romney said he would end subsidies to PBS, and now the television network is responding.

During the debate with President Barack Obama, Romney said to moderator and PBS newsman Jim Lehrer that: “I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you too. But I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for things we don’t need.”

In a statement issued early today, PBS stated “We are very disappointed that PBS became a political target in the Presidential debate last night. Governor Romney does not understand the value the American people place on public broadcasting and the outstanding return on investment the system delivers to our nation. We think it is important to set the record straight and let the facts speak for themselves.”

Other excerpts from the PBS statement included:

• ”The federal investment in public broadcasting equals about one one-hundredth of one percent of the federal budget. Elimination of funding would have virtually no impact on the nation’s debt. Yet the loss to the American public would be devastating.”
• ”As a stated supporter of education, Governor Romney should be a champion of public broadcasting, yet he is willing to wipe out services that reach the vast majority of Americans, including underserved audiences, such as children who cannot attend preschool and citizens living in rural areas.”
• ”For more than 40 years Big Bird, has embodied the public broadcasting mission – harnessing the power of media for the good of every citizen, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay. Our system serves as a universally accessible resource for education, history, science, arts and civil discourse.”
• ”Each day, the American public receives an enduring and daily return on investment that is heard, seen, read and experienced in public media broadcasts, apps, podcasts and online – all for the cost of about $1.35 per person per year.”

Presidential Debate: Best Quotes of the Night

With an over 60 million viewers watching, Mitt Romney and President Obama dove deep into there first of three presidential debates Wednesday night. During which they also mixed in a couple zingers, a few jokes and a big shout out to Michelle Obama on her 20th wedding anniversary.  

ROUND ONE: ALL HUGS AND SMILES

Here are some of the best quotes from the candidates' first of three face-to-face showdowns.

1. Mitt Romney on Big Bird:  I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS," Romney said. "I'm going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird. Actually, [I] like you, too. But I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.
2. President Obama on Medicare Vouchers:  "If you're 54 or 55, you might want to listen because this will affect you. The idea, which was originally presented by Congressman Ryan, your running mate, is that we would give a voucher to seniors and they could go out in the private marketplace and buy their own health insurance. "The problem is that because the voucher wouldn't necessarily keep up with health care inflation, it was estimated that this would cost the average senior about $6,000 a year."
3. Mitt Romney on ending Obamacare:  "When you look at 'Obamacare,' the Congressional Budget Office has said it will cost $2,500 a year more than traditional insurance," Romney said. "So it's adding to cost. And as a matter of fact, when the president ran for office, he said that, by this year, he would have brought down the cost of insurance for each family by $2,500 a family. Instead, it's gone up by that amount. So it's expensive. Expensive things hurt families. So that's one reason I don't want it."
4. President Obama on Massachusetts Health Care:  "The irony is that we've seen this model work really well in Massachusetts because Gov. Romney did a good thing, working with Democrats in the state to set up what is essentially the identical model and, as a consequence, people are covered there," Obama said. "It hasn't destroyed jobs. And as a consequence, we now have a system in which we have the opportunity to start bringing down costs as opposed to just leaving millions of people out in the cold." "Gov. Romney said this has to be done on a bipartisan basis," Obama added. "This was a bipartisan idea. In fact, it was a Republican idea. And Gov. Romney, at the beginning of this debate, wrote and said what we did in Massachusetts could be a model for the nation. "And I agree that the Democratic legislators in Massachusetts might have given some advice to Republicans in Congress about how to cooperate. But the fact of the matter is we used the same advisers and they say it's the same plan."
